WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: Age-appropriate, instructional tools to effectively teach your youngest (K-1) students the foundational skills they need to become strong writers. You’ll be introduced to the developmental stages of writing, learn to teach your students how to identify genre and author’s purpose, and develop the foundational skills of narrative, informational and opinion writing. HOW THE DAY BREAKS OUT:
Part 2– Narrative/Informational Skills
Create both Short and Extended Constructed Response by applying specific skills to tasks that require students to identify and cite evidence from text
Review foundational skills for application to Constructed Response: analyze and annotate source text, deconstruct the task
Model the step by step process for both Short and Extended Constructed Response using source texts
Create an effective response using specific tools and strategies such as paraphrasing and citing evidence from the source text
Develop Key Comprehension Questions for use with a variety of source text - reading adoptions, stories, articles, science and/or social studies text
Utilize the Framing Questions for literary analysis
Evaluate responses using rubrics to target areas of weakness for focused instruction
Required prerequisite: Background in Empowering Writers Informational/Expository 6 hour training recommended.

Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade educators will learn how to implement our A Sentence A Day resource. Instruction includes a weekly guide that establishes meaningful routines in the primary classroom.
The focus begins in Kindergarten with pencil placement, spacing, and letter formation. The resource then progresses to writing sentences and building powerful vocabulary, alongside grammar and conventions. The 1st and 2nd grade components of A Sentence A Day continue the construction of strong sentences while emphasizing parts of speech, grammar, and conventions.
Each week of instruction includes a theme, helping students begin to build story awareness.
This professional development course will also include connections to the Getting to Write resources for Kindergarten and 1st grade, as well as genre-specific writing resources for 2nd grade.
